Generations at work

10 surprising conclusions leading to new paradigms about the way the different generations behave and expect from their organization.

In 2008, Mathieu Pleyers, in his quality of visiting Professor at HEC-Business School of ULg, has carried out, together with Professor François Pichault (HEC-ULg), Professor Jacques Vilrokx (VUB) and Berenschot Belgium, a research with the aim to understand what could be the differences between the Baby-boomers, the X and Y generations in the scope of the working environment.
The study also identifies the expectations of the different generations regarding their working environment and the requirements towards their employers.

In the media, generations’ positioning leads to a lot of statements focusing on the huge differences between the oldest and youngest generation, considering the first as being reluctant to change and executing what was decided whilst the second is positioned as being moving, surfing and, hence, difficult to attract and for sure to retain in an organization.

The study has been conducted from the 28th of April and the 13th of June 2008 across Belgium. 851 peoples from 20 until 59 years old have been interviewed. What they mentioned is completely surprising and not in line with what is generally expected. The study is now considered as reference in the field of generations management, not only in Belgium but all over Europe.

If you are an HR Manager or a CEO, don’t miss the conclusions. They will affect the way you have to design your company’s HR strategy.

  • The study has had a lot of impact in the media.

It was considered in the French review Gérer & Comprendre for an article entitled “La représentation managériale: Pour en finir avec la génération Y” from François Pichault and Mathieu Pleyers.
